Auto companies like BMW and Volkswagen will likely be hit hardest at first, he added, given their heavy reliance on the Baltimore port. The Baltimore port directly employs over 15,000 workers and indirectly supports nearly 140,000 jobs via other port activities, according to Maryland Gov. Baltimore port employees could be temporarily furloughed, or see disruption in their work hours amid the shutdown. "The bridge collapse is the latest challenge for Northeast U.S. supply chains," said S&P Global Head of Supply Chain Research Chris Rogers.

JetBlue Airways said Wednesday that it will terminate its partnership in the northeast U.S. with American Airlines after a federal judge ruled to block the agreement, as the New York airline focuses on its acquisition of Spirit Airlines . American said last month that it would challenge the ruling against the JetBlue partnership, but New York-based JetBlue said Wednesday it would not appeal the decision. JetBlue's deal to buy Spirit came together after JetBlue and American launched a partnership in the Northeast. American Airlines said Wednesday that it will still appeal the ruling. A spokesman for the airline did not immediately say how American could salvage the deal if JetBlue plans to begin unwinding it.

Thick smoke from wildfires in Canada has halted or delayed flights at major East Coast airports. Haze from distant wildfires blanketed cities from New York to North Carolina, reducing visibility. Reduced visibility from wildfire smoke will continue to impact air travel today. The smoke originates from over 450,000 acres of active wildfires burning across central and eastern Canada, focused in Ontario and Quebec. Forecasts show the wildfire smoke will continue to impact visibility and air quality for the next 24 to 48 hours, depending on the wind shifts.

Some apps run on data crowdsourced from relatively affordable air quality sensors sold by companies such as PurpleAir and IQAir. Air quality apps and mapsOutdoor air quality-monitoring apps like AirNow, AirCare and AirVisual have been among the nation's most used apps in past years when wildfires raged in Oregon and California. Like most air pollution trackers, it uses a color-coded visual system to indicate whether air pollution levels are good to hazardous, or whether there is not enough data to issue a rating. These include a Fire and Smoke Map, which provides information on fire locations, smoke plumes and air quality, and the AirNow Interactive Map shows ozone and particulate matter from air quality monitors across the country. Indoor air matters, tooWhile outdoor air quality is important, society doesn't talk or do enough about indoor air quality, said Richard Corsi, University of California, Davis' incoming dean of the college of engineering, currently a professor and dean at Portland State University.

JetBlue Airways has unveiled new perks for less-frequent flyers who are striving for elite status, the latest carrier to rethink its loyalty program to reflect shifting travel habits. Other changes include:JetBlue breaking up its elite Mosaic status into four levels, with benefits corresponding to each. To earn level 1 of that program travelers will need 50 tiles, and that comes with benefits like access to seats with extra legroom at check-in and same-day flight changes. JetBlue is also offering perks when a customer moves up a level of elite status like pet-fee waivers or a $99 credit card statement credit. American Airlines late last year, for example, raised the spending threshold required for customers to earn elite status.

An arctic mix of cold air and whipping winds created teeth-chattering conditions across the Northeast on Saturday, with wind chills pushing temperatures into the double-digits below zero and causing “frost quakes” in some places. Northern New England experienced the worst of the wind chills and severe cold, but the frigid temperatures extended to New York and other parts of the region as well. Temperatures were expected to warm up on Sunday.

The air temperature at the peak reached minus 47 degrees F (-44 C), with winds gusting near 100 miles per hour (160 kilometers per hour), according to the Mount Washington Observatory. In Providence, Rhode Island, the mercury dropped to minus 9 degrees F (-23 C), well below the previous all-time low of minus 2 degrees F (-19 C), set in 1918. Several cities took emergency measures to aid residents, including opening warming centers and conducting outreach to ensure homeless people were sheltered from the brutal cold. The frigid weather was expected to be short-lived, with temperatures forecast to be significantly higher on Sunday. The high temperature in Boston on Sunday will approach 47 degrees F (8.3 C), the NWS said.
Bitter cold hit New York City and other parts of the Northeast Friday. A blast of bitter cold swept across the Midwest and Northeast Friday, with snow squalls and sudden whiteout conditions making driving, particularly on highways, dangerous in some places. Wind chill from gusty northwesterly winds will make for the coldest weather in decades, the National Weather Service said. Windchill warnings and advisories are in effect for the Northern Plains as well as the Northeast. Record-breaking lows are forecast for the New York City, Boston and Providence, R.I., areas.
Are Vaccines Fueling New Covid Variants?

Public-health experts are sounding the alarm about a new Omicron variant dubbed XBB that is rapidly spreading across the Northeast U.S. Some studies suggest it is as different from the original Covid strain from Wuhan as the 2003 SARS virus. Should Americans be worried? It isn’t clear that XBB is any more lethal than other variants, but its mutations enable it to evade antibodies from prior infection and vaccines as well as existing monoclonal antibody treatments. Growing evidence also suggests that repeated vaccinations may make people more susceptible to XBB and could be fueling the virus’s rapid evolution.
As oil and gas prices for households in the Northeast U.S. hit their highest levels in years, state governors asked the federal government for help. The request includes suspending the Jones Act to skirt curbs on delivering natural gas from places like Texas to Massachusetts. Here’s more about the 102-year-old law.

Photographer: Mark Kauzlarich/Bloomberg via Getty ImagesJetBlue Airways plans to launch flights from New York to Paris next summer, a trans-Atlantic expansion it argues will bring down prices on routes dominated by large carriers. Tickets will go on sale "in the coming months" for flights between its hub at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport and Paris' Charles de Gaulle Airport, JetBlue said Wednesday. It plans to add flights from Boston to Paris later. JetBlue began flights to London from New York in summer 2021, more than two years after it first announced its plans.
An American Airlines plane lands on a runway near a parked JetBlue plane at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on July 16, 2020 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The Justice Department heads to court in Boston on Tuesday in hopes of undoing a year-and-a-half-old pact between American Airlines and JetBlue Airways in the Northeast U.S. Last September, the Justice Department along with the attorneys general of six states and the District of Columbia sued to block the partnership, which was approved in the final days of the Trump administration. The antitrust trial will be a test for President Joe Biden's Justice Department, which has been tasked with taking a hard stance against threats to competition. Earlier this month, a federal judge denied the Justice Department's bid to block UnitedHealth's acquisition of Change Healthcare.
